Considering a Reiki Class?
by Kathy Duffy, Reiki Master Teacher since 2000
Having trained many hundreds of Reiki students over the past 17 years, I have found two common denominators in a majority of people who decide to join a class: 1.They feel drawn to express their inner desire to heal and help others. 2. They desire healing for themselves. Thankfully, Reiki fulfills each and includes both.
For some, the spirituality of Reiki is of first importance, a way to expand their mystical relationship. For others, it is the practical application of Reiki that appeals to them. Reiki can be used to enhance existing training, such as massage, physical therapy, yoga, nursing, animal care – even psychological therapy. Yet by no means is Reiki’s positive influence limited to these purposes. It doesn’t matter what your background is or how old you are, Reiki will enrich you, your workplace, your family and all your interactions. We all long to improve our life in some manner. Reiki satisfies that longing for a better existence in a big way. Call it life changing? Call it life enhancing? Yes, it is.
If you have experienced a Reiki treatment for yourself, you understand the impact of being nurtured and held in the peaceful, loving flow of Reiki energy. You know firsthand how you feel better in many ways during and after a treatment. Hopefully, in noticing the positive effects of Reiki, you understand how crucial it is to pay attention to your own self-healing. The idea of healing the self is emphasized in Reiki. One’s capacity for love flows outward. If there is not enough inner love, the sharing of love is not fully flowing. Taking care of yourself is the highest form of self-respect. That is why using Reiki for yourself is essential and why it is the main principal of Reiki. Use Reiki for yourself. Everything else evolves from there.
The elemental nature of Reiki is loving, creative and all embracing. In Reiki energy, the possibilities of healing in the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects are wide open and available. Each Being is witnessed in their totality and guided toward the most natural state of equilibrium possible. Sounds wonderful, right?
One of the most common comments I receive from Reiki trained people is this: “I no longer feel helpless, I can do Reiki and know I contributed good.” If you want to add that empowerment to your life, for yourself and others, consider Reiki. Anyone can receive Reiki! Anyone can learn Reiki!
Why attend a certified in-person class instead of learning through an online course?
With the plethora of online classes offered these days in all areas and subjects, it might seem convenient, fast and perhaps cost efficient to take part in a Reiki online training. I mourn the impersonal nature of taking a Reiki online course for these reasons: 1. The “learning” of Reiki is not in the technique but in the understanding of the nature of Reiki, the creativity of Reiki and all the possibilities offered in the sacred energy of giving and receiving Reiki. These aspects are not easily conveyed in written material but are part of dynamic conversation. 2. Reiki is an invitation to explore and be inspired in our healing path. Each individual benefits from a caring and personal interaction with a teacher who sees you as a unique seeker and honors that. 3. Being in a group of other students is truly an amazing experience. The stories, interactions, emotional contact and close bonds formed are priceless. You have opportunities to express yourself, ask questions and be part of the energetic exchange . 4. An “attunement” is an essential segment of the Reiki healing method and you can’t really be said to be giving Reiki without it. The attunement is meant to be an initiation, a connector and igniter of the flow of Reiki Energy. It should also be a blessing and a healing. It is a very sacred part of what Reiki is. The ability to perform attunements is passed down from teacher to teacher in the lineage of the founder Dr. Usui. The attunement or initiation segment of Reiki is a sacred space for healing and connection and cannot be fully felt or appreciated without the presence of a teacher (one you can see and know). In an attunement your energy field, spiritual self and physical body are recognized, blessed and connected to the flow of Reiki. Personal attention is given to each individual and each soul honored. You are seen, felt and cared for. Because you, your fellow students and your teacher are all present in a safe and blessed space you will have a truly awesome spiritual experience. I know I would not be comfortable sitting in front of a computer all by myself trying to access such a special event ! 5. In a classroom training, you see demonstrations of treatment options and how to apply Reiki for yourself and others (even animals!). You are able to immediately practice with others, receive guidance and feedback. This is tremendously valuable in cementing your confidence and just feels great. 6. You join a community of like minded people and have someplace to go for continuing support where you can grow and deepen. Your commitment and confidence in Reiki is encouraged when you have others and your teachers to turn to. I know people who have tried the online route and didn’t feel confident that they could really “do” Reiki or who to ask about things that come up afterward.
Note: You should always question your potential Reiki teachers as to their experience and qualifications. And as importantly, you should feel comfortable and confident that you are in the right place with the right people for you. Use your feelings when seeking a Reiki class…this is a spiritual journey and could be the most important journey you take. A journey of the heart, not the mind.
Check the calendar for the next class. We train in all levels of Usui (traditional) Reiki, including Teacher level.
